A common crane fly of grasslands, lawns and forest edges throughout Florida. Primary range is the entire United States, southern Canada and Mexico, reported from Alaska into Brazil.
Ferruginous tiger crane flies are overall orange in color with banding on the abdomen. The larvae are found in the soil or leaf mold where they feed on plant debris and grass roots.
Nephrotoma ferruginea is a member of the Tipulidae - Large Crane Flies family.
