A skipper butterfly found mostly in open woodlands and woodland edges with nearby streams in Florida and much of the eastern United States west into Texas through Nebraska.
The male zabulon skipper is mostly orange on the upperside with some brown on the wing margins. The underside of the wings are yellow-orange with dark brown margins and a yellow basal spot surrounded by brown. Females are brown above with white glassy spots near the outer margin of the forewing. The undersides of the wings are burgundy-brown and lighter near the margins appearing frosted. There is a distinct white streak along the costal edge of the hindwing.
Larval hosts include many grasses and adults feed on a wide variety of flowers.
Poanes zabulon is a member of the Hesperiidae - Skippers family.
