Seen mostly in pastures and other open areas such as roadsides in the central Florida peninsula northward. These butterflies are resident in Florida, Texas and California and migrate throughout the southern two-thirds of the United States and most of Mexico.
A yellow butterfly with a small black eye-spot on the forewing and a white spot on the hindwing. The upperside is dark at the tips of the forewings forming the profile of a yellow dogface looking out on each forewing. There is also a dark dusky patch near the base of the leading edge of the forewings. The hindwings are edged in black. The undersides of the wings often have pinkish markings.
The larvae feed on plants of the Fabaceae - pea family.
Zerene cesonia is a member of the Pieridae - Whites & Sulphurs family.
