This tiny plant is frequently found in wet flatwoods and bogs throughout much of Florida. The range extends through the southeastern coastal states from Texas to North Carolina.
Members of the Bartonia genus have scale-like leaves less than 5 mm long. The calyx is four-lobed and the petals are only slightly united at the base. B. verna has corolla lobes that are 5 - 10 mm (3/16 - 3/8 in.) long with a rounded apex and appearing in the early part of the year.
Bartonia verna is a member of the Gentianaceae - Gentian family.
