A common plant of shell middens, hammocks and dunes along both coasts of the peninsula and across south Florida plus the Bahamas.
The only species of Mentzelia found in Florida, which is likewise the only Florida genus of the family Loasaceae.
Yellow five-petaled flowers can appear nearly any time of the year in the leaf axils. The alternate, brittle leaves are covered with barbed hairs that cause pieces to cling to clothing, prompting the common name poorman's patches.
Mentzelia floridana is a member of the Loasaceae - Loasa family.
