Cardinalis cardinalis (Linnaeus, 1758)

A songbird of a variety of habitats throughout Florida. The range extends through the eastern United States east of the Rocky Mountain states. Also found in the southwest border areas and in much of Mexico and just into southeastern Canada.
Males have a distinctive overall bright red plumage and a black face mask and throat. Both sexes have a head crest. Females are mostly brown with a soft reddish tinge in the wings, tail and crest.
Cardinalis cardinalis is a member of the Cardinalidae - Cardinals, Grosbeaks, and Allies family.
