Anartia jatrophae butterflies can be found throughout Florida in open moist areas such as the edges of water bodies, parks and feilds. Ranging in the US mainly in the southeastern coastal plain from Virginia to Texas, sometimes wandering inland. Range includes the West Indies, Mexico, Central America and South America into Argentina.
The wingspan is 5-7cm (2 to 3-3/4 in.) and wings are white on top with light brown markings. The outer margins are brown with two rows of lighter crescents. The forewings have one black dot each and the hindwings each have two black dots.
Host plants include turkey tangle fogfruit (Phyla nodiflora), Carolina wild petunia (Ruellia caroliniensis), and various species of waterhyssop (Bacopa).
Anartia jatrophae is a member of the Nymphalidae - Brush-footed butterflies family.
