Chinquapin is a deciduous shrub or small tree growing up to 20 meters tall in open hammocks and sandhills thoughout the panhandle and the peninsula as far south as Orange and Hillsborough Counties. The range extends west as far as Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas; north to Kentucky and Ohio; and northeast into New York and Massachusetts.
Castanea pumila has alternate, dentate margined leaves 4-18 cm long, with viens terminating at the tips of the teeth. The white male flowers are borne in long spikes from the leaf axils in the spring. The fruit is encased in a spiny burr 3-4 cm in diameter.
Castanea pumila is a member of the Fagaceae - Beech family.
