A year-round resident of marshes in the Florida peninsula and the panhandle coast, glossy ibis are less frequently seen than the much more abundant white ibis.
Like other ibis, glossy ibis have a long downward-curved bill. Glossy ibis have a dark body and dark legs. Adults have a brownish bill and chestnut colored body and metallic green on the wings. Juveniles are duller overall with streaking on the neck with a darker underside. All have thin pale lines leading forward from the eye bordering a dark face.

Plegadis falcinellus is a member of the Threskiornithidae - Ibises and Spoonbills family.
