Stillingia sylvatica

A common plant of sandhills and flatwoods throughout nearly all of Florida. The range extends throughout the southeastern states into Virginia to the northeast and into Colorado in the northwest.
This is a perennial herbaceous small shrub rarely reaching 1m (3 ft.) tall, and typically having multiple smooth stems containing milky sap. The alternate leaves are elliptic to oblanceolate and minutely toothed, up to 9cm (3-1/2 in.) long and 4.5cm (1-3/4 in.) wide with very short petioles up to 4mm (3/16 in.) long. The inflorescence is a terminal spike if tiny greenish, yellow or reddish flowers lacking petals. The male flowers are nearer the tip with the female flowers below. The fruit is a three-lobed capsule.
Stillingia sylvatica is a member of the Euphorbiaceae - Spurge family.
