This brightly colored beetle is found in Florida from the central peninsula northward throughout the eastern United States and westward through the Great Plains. The range also includes Central America, north into Mexico and South into Columbia.
The elytra (wing covers) are broadest towards the rear and are typically orange, or yellowish with black markings. In this species the black band across the middle of the elytra often narrows towards the sides (when folded), or is narrow all the way across. The black markings towards the base of the wings that appear up the center when folded is usually straight and narrow, continuing onto the metasternum which is orange, red or yellow on the sides.
The elytra are often raised in a defensive display when threatened.
