One of Florida's most interesting habitats is ancient scrub. This high, dry, well-drained land is unique for a number of reasons. One, the natural fire frequency is much higher (20-80 years) than other Florida uplands such as pine flatwoods. Second, scrub is home to a large number of plant and animal species that are endemic to Florida, many of which are only found in this habitat. The ultimate example of this is the Florida Scrub Jay, Florida's only endemic bird.
Scrub habitat occurs along the Lake Wales ridge and in the Big Scrub of Ocala National Forest. Lyonia Preserve is also another excellent place to view scrub, and Clark Bay Conservation Area has a small amount (146 acres) of scrub.
