The Santa Fe River is located in the northern peninsula of Florida, originating in the swamps and lakes Alto and Santa Fe between Keystone Heights, Waldo and Melrose. From here it flows generally westward north of Gainesville. In O'Leno State Park the river sinks underground, flowing through the Bellamy Cave System to resurface three miles away in the Santa Fe River Rise Preserve State Park. The natural land bridge above the cave system has been used as a convenient travel route by humans throughout history.
