Only in Florida is a sample of some species that are state endemics - they naturally occur only in Florida. Our only endemic bird is the Florida scrub jay, shown here from Lyonia Preserve in Deltona. Florida bonamia, also called Florida lady's-nightcap, is another endemic scrub species that was seen in Volusia County in 1900 by Allan Hiram Curtiss. The image of Florida Indian plantain is titled "Florida Cacalia Trio" showing three of the distinctive little flowers of this endemic plant that is also called Cacalia. Celestial Lily is an interesting little endemic flower that is only found in the Florida peninsula, mostly in the east central portion. The flowers only open in mid-afternoon for a few hours in the late summer and early fall. Scrubland goldenaster is only found in flatwoods and disturbed sites of the Florida peninsula. Peninsula cooter, seen here basking on an alligator shaped log, is an endemic subspecies of the Florida cooter.
