This is a frequent tree of dry to mesic hammocks from the central peninsula northward. The range includes much of the eastern United States.
Pignut hickory is a deciduous tree that may vary from 25-40m (82 to 131 ft.) in height. The odd-pinnate compound leaves are alternate and usually made up of five or seven leaflets, although sometimes only three. The leaflets are lanceolate to elliptic and serrately toothed. All parts of the leaves are typically glabrous with the exception that some leaflets may have on the underside small tufts of hairs in the vein axils.

Carya glabra is a member of the Juglandaceae - Walnut family.
