A frequent wildflower of sandhills from Volusia and Marion Counties north and throughout the panhandle. The range is mostly in the coastal plain from North Carolina into Texas, plus Arkansas and Oklahoma.
The leafy stems may grow to 1m (~3 ft.) tall or more. Stems are mostly smooth with tufts of hairs. The leaves are un-lobed but frequently toothed, downy and with paler undersides. The fertile ray florets are yellow. Disks are greenish, with sterile florets becoming red to maroon upon opening.
A scent similar to chocolate may be detectable when the disk florets are open.
