A common grass of dunes, salt marshes and disturbed shores of brackish water in most coastal counties. The range extends along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts from Maryland to Teaxs. Found worldwide in temperate coastal regions.
Sometimes erect and often decumbent and rooting at the nodes. Leaf blades are flat at the base, curving inward above with long trichomes on the upper surface. Panicles are tightly contracted.
Dropseed is one of the important salt-tolerant plants that help in the natural process of dune building and protection against the coastal elements.

Sporobolus virginicus is a member of the Poaceae - Grass family.
