A common wildflower of marshes, pond and lake margins and other seepage areas throughout most of Florida except for the southern tip. Ranges through much of the eastern United States and Canada, plus Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Washington state and California.
Growing from 15-60cm (~6 to 24 in.) tall with green four-sided stems and opposite leaves with rounded or obtuse tips and rounded to cuneate bases. Lower leaves are ovate to elliptic and the upper leaves are ovate to nearly round. The small flowers have five yellow petals that are shorter than the sepals and five to sixteen stamens.
