A frequent evergreen shrub of wet to dry flatwoods, bogs and pond margins throughout much of Florida. The range extends through the southeastern coastal plain from Louisiana into South Carolina.
Growing erect up to 1.5m (5 ft.) tall but usually shorter. The leaves are opposite, simple and needle-like with the largest 6-10mm (1/4 to 3.8 in.) long. The leaf margins are strongly revolute (turned under) and have black dots that are conspicuous under magnification. The flowers usually appear singly in the leaf axils and have five yellow petals, five needle-like sepals up to 3.5mm (~1/8 in.) long and many stamens. The fruit is a narrow mostly cylindrical capsule less than 5mm (~3/16 in.) long.
