Hypericum cistifolium Lam.
Roundpod St. John's-wort
St. John's Wort
Florida native
A common small shrub of wet flatwoods, cypress swamp margins and marshes in nearly all of Florida. Ranges mainly in the southeastern coastal plain from Texas into North Carolina.
A perennial with woody stems growing to about 1m (~3 ft.) tall. The leaves are opposite, with each pair ascending up the stem perpendicular to the leaves above and below and often with pairs of smaller leaves in the leaf axils. The flowers appear in terminal branched clusters and have five yellow petals and many stamens. Flowers are up to 12mm (~1/2 in.) wide, smaller than many of the other Hypericum species. The fruit is a dark elliptic capsule about 5mm (3/16 in.) long.
Another Hypericum species with similar-looking leaves is H. canadense, which has larger flowers with only 15 stamens.
Hypericum cistifolium is a member of the Clusiaceae - Mangosteen family.
