Florida native
A frequent tree of hammocks, shell mounds, coastal beaches, old fields and roadsides throughout most of Florida. The range extends throughout the eastern United States, west into Colorado plus Oregon. Also found in Ontario and Quebec.
This evergreen tree can grow to 30m (almost 100 ft.) tall. The opposite leaves are ranked in four rows, with each scale-like leaf 2-3mm (~1/16 to 1/8 in.) long. Male and female cones appear on separate trees. The female berry-like cones are fleshy and remain closed at maturity. Male cones appear in yellowish clusters 3-6cm (1-3/16 to 2-3/8 in.) long.
