Frequently found in floodplain forests of the central and north peninsula and west to the Apalachicola River. Also ranges into the coastal plain of Georgia and South Carolina.
Swamp twinflower is a deciduous perennial with weak decumbent stems up to 60cm (2 ft.) long and often rooting at the nodes. The small opposite leaves are elliptic to elliptic-ovate. Flowers are similar to Ruellia species, but with a shorter tube quickly flaring out into the bell-shaped corolla which is less than 1.5cm (6/10 in.) long. The flowers are in the leaf axils with a pale lavender corolla having darker lavender markings in the throat.
