This small plant is frequent in pine flatwoods, sandhills, cypress swamp margins and dry woods throughout most of Florida. The range extends through much of the central and eastern United States except the northeastern part of New England.
This herb has glabrous, grooved stems to 71cm (28 in.) tall. The lowest leaves may be oppositeor whiled, the upper leaves are narrow and alternate. The rose-purple flowers are rarely white and are in a terminal, cylindrical cluster. Flowers have three petals, with the lower petal fringed and twice as long as the lateral sepals.
