An occasional herb mainly of mesic hammocks in the. north and central peninsula asn west into the central panhandle. The range extends through the southeastern United States west into Texas to Kansas and north into Illinois, Ohio and New York. Also found in eastern Mexico.
Heartleaf nettle is an annual growing from 15-80cm (6 to 31-1/2 in.) tall with stinging trichomes on the stem. The opposite leaves are on relatively long petioles, with the blades ovate to orbiculate and having serrate margins, The upper leaves are reduced and sometimes more lanceolate. The clusters of small flowers are shorter than the leaf petioles. Flowers are unisexual with pistillate and staminate flowers in the same inflorescence. The pistillate flowers have linear outer tepals 0.4-0.8mm long and ovate inner tepals 1.4-2mm long and 1-1.4mm wide.


Urtica chamaedryoides is a member of the Urticaceae - Nettle family.
