A herbaceous perennial typically reaching 1.2-1.8m (4 to 6 ft.) tall with large green leaves on long erect petioles. The cream-colored flowers surrounded by pink bracts appear at the top of the trunk. The fruit is a pink-skinned banana containing many large hard black seeds nearly 1cm (3/8 in.) long.
