A rare plant mainly of coastal dune depressions of both the Florida panhandle and peninsula. The range extends throughout the southeastern states from Louisiana into North Carolina.
Moundlily yucca does not have filamentous threads along the leaf margins as some of the other species do. The leaf blades are mostly erect, usually with smooth margins, although sometimes with rough edges and/or minute teeth. The inflorescence of showy white flowers that are sometines tinged with pink appear in a cluster on a leaf-covered stalk that extends well above the basal rosette of leaves.
