A common grass of flatwoods and sandhills throughout most of Florida. Ranges through the southeast, mostly in the coastal plain, from Virginia into Texas and Oklahoma.
The wiry, slender stems are usually less than a meter (~3 ft.) tall. Leaves up to 30cm (12 in.) long and 2mm (~3/32 in.) wide and usually curled inward (involute) and tapering towards the tip. Panicles are open, up to 28cm (11 in.) long and 6cm (2-1/3 in.) wide, oblong to pyramidal shaped. The spikelets are purplish-red to a bronzy-brown and 4mm (5/32 in.) long.
