An occasional grass of river and stream riverbottoms and seepage areas in the panhandle and the peninsula south as far as Polk, Osceola and Brevard Counties. Switchcane ranges throughout the southeastern states west into Texas to Kansas and north into the Ohio River Valley states and New York.
Arundinaria gigantea is the host plant for southern pearly-eye butterflies.
