A common plant of wet flatwoods, swamps and marshes throughout all of Florida except the Keys. The range extends throughout the southeastern states west into Texas to Kansas and north into Illinois to Connecticut.
Virginia buttonweed is a perennial that has spreading reddish-green stems often forming mats. Leaves are opposite, narrow and sessile with hairy margins(ciliate). Flowers are sessile in the leaf axils, with a white four-lobed corolla that is hairy within and having two stamens. The green calyx is two-lobed and hairy.
Diodia virginiana is a member of the Rubiaceae - Madder family.
