Found mostly in fields and open woodlands throughout Florida. The range extends through the eastern United States, although less frequent northward. Also found in Mexico and the Bahamas.
A fairly large grasshopper 4-7cm (1-1/2 to 3-3/4 in.) in length. Has a distinctive creamy stripe on top running down the middle from the head rearward. Adults are typically yellow-brown with various black, light and brown markings. Nymphs are variously colored and can vary with temperature.
Often flies up into trees when disturbed, a characteristic not shared with most other grasshoppers.
Schistocerca americana is a member of the Acrididae - Short-horned Grasshoppers family.
