Anas platyrhynchos
Mallard
Mallard Duck
Florida native
Mallards are a widespread North American duck. Found across Canada during the breeding season, year-round in much of the United States and mostly only during the winter in the southeast and near the Mexican border. Some mallards remain in Florida year-round.
The males are distinctive when in breeding plumage with their green head and bright yellow bill. A white neck ring separates the green from the russet-brown chest. The body is gray with a white-edged black tail. A few black tailfeathers are often curled up. Females and juveniles are mottled-brown with orange and brown bills. All have a blue patch with white leading and trailing borders on each wing.
Nearly all domestic ducks other than muscovys are related to mallards.
Anas platyrhynchos is a member of the Anatidae - Ducks, Geese and Swans family.
