These grasshoppers can be found in open sandy areas throughout Florida at any time of year. The range also includes the coasts and coastal plain from Louisiana to Virginia.
Marbled grasshoppers are gray and/or brown. The forewing has transverse blackish bands that merge into a continuous blank band along the trailing edge that shows high along the sides when folded at rest with the transverse bands leading downward. The hind wings that are not visible at rest have a dark yellow or orange-yellow basal area with a wide black band in the middle area and dusky black tip. The hind femora are yellow with dark bands on the inside and gray with dark bands externally. The hind tibia are orange or red with a yellow band at the top. Males are 26-31mm (~1 to 1-1/4 in.) in length, females 27-35mm (~1 to 1-3/8 in.).
