A warm water species found in shallow waters and the intertidal zone of sandy beaches along both coasts of the Florida peninsula, in the Florida keys and along the southeastern Atlantic coast as far north as Virginia.
Highly variable in color, the shells are 19mm (3/4 in.) or shorter.
The narrow cone-shaped objects in the photo below are the shells of straight needle-pteropods - Creseis acicula.
Donax variabilis is a member of the Donacidae - Bean Clams, Wedge Shells family.
