These small snakes can be occasionally seen in sandy pine and oak forests and scrub habitats in the north and central Florida peninsula.
These slender snakes are typically 36–51 cm (14–20 in) long with bodies about the diameter of a pencil.
The favorite food of short-tailed snakes appears to be snakes of the genus Tantilla. Like their predator, black-crowned or centipede snakes are also small burrowing snakes with some species also endemic to Florida.

Lampropeltis extenuate is a member of the Colubridae - Colubrids - nonvenomous snakes family.
