Usually found in wet meadows or grassy areas near ponds and streams in the southeastern United States.
This is the only species of the genus found in the United States. Despite the common name, they are not wingless. The forewings of females are completely hidden by the pronotum, the exposed part of the male forewings are less than the length of the pronotum.
Odontoxiphidium apterum is a member of the Tettigoniidae - Katydids family.
