Found throughout Florida in and around wetlands or any body of water surrounded by vegetation. The year-round range includes nearly the entire United States, plus Nova Scotia and coastal British Columbia. During breeding season the range extends into all but the most northern parts of Canada. The non-breeding range extends into the Baja peninsula and adjacent mainland Mexico.
Male birds are black with a distinctive red shoulder patch bordered with yellow. Females are overall brown and heavily streaked, paler underneath with a yellowish wash around the bill and often having a whitish eyebrow. Both sexes have a thin conical bill that is dark.
Agelaius phoeniceus is a member of the Icteridae - Blackbirds, Orioles and relatives family.
