Scrub mints are variously placed in either the genus Calamintha or Clinopodium. Recent studies, including Andre A. Naranjo, Christine E. Edwards, Matthew A. Gitzendanner, Douglas E. Soltis, Pamela S. Soltis, Abundant incongruence in a clade endemic to a biodiversity hotspot: Phylogenetics of the scrub mint clade (Lamiaceae), Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, Vol. 192, 2024, seem to indicate that the scrub mints should be reclassified as to genus and species, with the possibility of new species described.
