The bays of the southeastern United States were previously considered to be in the genus Persea along with avocado(Persea americana), the type species for the genus. Recent studies have determined that these bays should be returned to the genus Tamala as they were treated by C.S. Rafinesque in 1838 and also later by J.K. Small in the early 1900's.
