The cattle egret was first described in 1758 by Linnaeus in his Systema naturae as Ardea ibis, but was moved to the genus Bubulcus by Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1855. It was moved back to the genus Ardea based on the results of a molecular phylogenetic study published in 2023 that found the cattle egrets were embedded with members of the genus Ardea.
