There are 15 species of the Liatris genus that occur in Florida and they are often challenging to distinguish from each other. One of these - Liatris gholsonii - was just recognized as a new species in 2002. L. tenuifolia even has a subspecies, var. quadrifolia

Liatris tenuifolia is a member of the Asteraceae - Aster family.
