Native to tropical Asia, this escaped species is sometimes found in swamps and wet ditches in some counties of the north and central Florida peninsula. It is also known to occur in Georgia, Louisiana, Hawaii and Puerto Rico.

Hedychium coronarium is a member of the Zingiberaceae - Ginger family.
