Native to the Mississippi River drainages, this is the little turtle that has been sold in pet and other stores for years and is one of the most widely exported reptile species. Often released into the wild when they get large, they compete with native species and have become established in parts of Florida and throughout the world.

Trachemys scripta is a member of the Emydidae - Box turtles and Pond turtles family.
