This is the larger and more common of the water snakes in Florida and can be abundant along rivers, creeks, canals and flooded prairies, and sometimes pond and lakes.
Adults range from 3-4 feet in length and are olive-brown to olive-green with only a vestige of their juvenile banding. The belly is yellowish to olive and unmarked except beneath the tail.
They can often be found at night lying along the edge of canals and flooded prairies. During warm weather they may be active both day and night.
