Bartram's Ixia found only in Florida is named for William Bartram who described it in his Travels

Welcome to the Paul Rebmann Nature Photography September 2016 Newsletter

Local subscribers note that Paul Rebmann will be presenting the narrated visual program on Florida endemic plants and animals titled Only in Florida at the Lyonia Environmental Center Saturday, Oct 8. The free program is scheduled for 1pm. Afterwards view the Only in Florida exhibit in the Lyonia Gallery and discuss the images with the photographer.

William Bartram explored Florida and the southeastern United States in the late 1700's and wrote a very popular book "Travels through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida". In it, he described many fascinating plants and creatures that he found in this wild territory that was largely unknown to most people. To find out about his discoveries, some plants that were named after him and why he was called Puc-Puggy, read more in William Bartram - Paul Rebmann Nature Photography blog.

Daytona State College professor Eric Breitenbach and University of Georgia professor Dorinda G. Dallmeyer are in the process of creating the documentary Cultivating the Wild: William Bartram's Travels. Both a scollarly examination of Bartram’s life as well as a mediation on what has come to pass in the more than 220 years since Travels was written. The film will focus both on Bartram and select 'modern day Bartrams', the people who continue his work and philosphies, making a committed stand for our living but vanishing world. The remaining production costs are being funded through a kickstarter campaign that ends Friday Oct 7. Visit cultivatingthewild.com for more information about the documentary and the kickstarter campaign.

Thank you, and I hope that you enjoy my photography.
